Robert “I found the career guidance service to be very useful to me in my time spent doing my Leaving Cert in Abbeyleix FEC. The service gave me an insight into many ideas and lots of useful hints and tips on what was the best direction for me to take while pursuing third level education. I think the guidance service is an essential building block as it helps students make the right decisions and can lead them in the right direction. It helps them choose the right courses and leaves them less confused about what they would like to do.”

“I spent 14 great years as a chef and worked in many great places, travelled to England and New Zealand and had great experiences. Due to a back injury and advice I decide to leave what was always a passion more than a job so the decision was not an easy one. I looked at what I could do so I went on to do a massage course and really enjoyed the experience and successfully opened a business for a year. I really wanted to treat a person as a whole and be able to treat all people that approached me professionally and with more confidence.
I knew I needed more education so I decided to do Nursing Studies at Abbeyleix Further Education Centre and the plan was to try and get into UCD or Trinity as a mature student to study Physiotherapy. I had the chance to do Leaving Cert Biology at the VEC which would increase my chances of entrance to a college.
The Nursing Studies provided me with work experience time so I approached a Physiotherapist and he allowed me to watch him work, this was the best use of my time because he gave me great advice as he was in the profession for 14 years so I listened. I walked away confused and disappointed and lost. I approached the guidance officer (AEGIS) at the FEC who assured me there were many more options for me. This experience led me to an interview in Carlow IT and I was accepted on a Higher Certificate in Physiology and Health Science, this is also a route of entry to BSc (Honours) in sports and Exercise Rehabilitation at IT Carlow.
I felt it to be a very easy process to fill in the CAO form with the help of the guidance officer (AEGIS) and the mock interviews we did in the VEC it gave me the confidence in the decisions I made. Due to the birth of my daughter in Sept 08 I had to defer for a year so I will be on my way to Carlow IT in Sept 09. I am so excited to begin another chapter in my life and this could have been lost only for the help, advice and encouragement from the people at AEGIS. I thank you very much for your time and energy.”
